The objective of this laboratory is to introduce students to the tensile test and to evaluate a number of material properties relevant to the tensile test. Young's modulus E, which is one of two material properties that completely characterize the elasticity of any linear elastic isotropic material, will be determined. A second linear elastic isotropic material property, namely the shear modulus G, will be determined when the torsion experiment is performed later in the semester. Additional material properties, namely, (tensile) yield stress 3/4y and ultimate (tensile) stress 3/4u will also be evaluated.

Universal Testing Machine

Equipment Name:  Universal Testing Machine (Capacity: Maximum 48 KN) Model Name:          H50KS Company Name:    Tinius Olsen    (Made In United Kingdom)
Manufacturer details: Tinius Olsen
Purchase source (funding): Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur
Order No: 258/IIT/PO/F/EQ-179/(B)/CRF/2006
Year of installation:  April, 2007

Utility and Working Principal

The machine is dedicated for tensile and compression tests for different specimens which includes metals, polymers, ceramics, rubber, membrane, Ramie fibre, Paper, etc. Working Principle:

The specimen is placed in the machine between the grips and an extensometer if required can automatically record the change in gauge length during the test. If an extensometer is not fitted, the machine itself can record the displacement between its cross heads on which the specimen is held. However, this method not only records the change in length of the specimen but also all other extending / elastic components of the testing machine and its drive systems including any slipping of the specimen in the grips. Once the machine is started it begins to apply an increasing load on specimen. Throughout the tests the control system and its associated software (TEST NAVIGATOR) record the load and extension or compression of the specimen.
